چکیده

2014 By postulating an approximate analytic form for the force between two colloidal particles arising from the structure of the intervening solvent, the solvent structure contributions to the small angle scattering from colloidal dispersions are analysed within a perturbation theory based on the random phase approximation. The force between two colloidal particles due to the solvent structure is seen to make in general a small but non-negligible contribution to both the osmotic compressibility and the small wavevector form of the static structure factor of the dispersion. Ultra-small-angle scattering studies of complex fluids

Recent experimental results from ultra-small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering (USANS and USAXS) studies of complex fluids, including colloidal dispersions, colloidal glasses, polymer blends, and biopolymer gels, are reviewed. We focus on data analysis and interpretation in the low q regime. New notable results include the apparent existence of large-scale structure in attractive colloidal gla...

Small-angle neutron scattering on a core-shell colloidal system: a contrast-variation study.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements are reported on a sterically stabilized, core-shell colloidal system using contrast variation. Aqueous dispersions of polystyrene particles bearing grafted poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) have been studied over a large range of particle concentrations and two different solvent conditions for the PEG polymer. SANS data are analyzed quantitatively by...

The influence of weak attractive forces on the microstructure and rheology of colloidal dispersions

Rheology is demonstrated to be a sensitive and quantitative probe of weak attractive forces acting in concentrated stable colloidal dispersions through comparison of rheology and small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a model dispersion with added polyampholyte. Polyampholyte-stabilized dispersions are found to exhibit weak attractions in the form of depletion forces arising from free p...

Colloidal dispersions of α-crystallin proteins. - I. Small angle X-ray analysis of the dispersion structure

2014 The structure of colloidal dispersions of eye lens 03B1-crystallin proteins was investigated using small angle X-ray scattering. The renormalized mean spherical approximation (RMSA), combined with a VerweyOverbeek (VO) potential, was used to analyse the results obtained at two different ionic strengths, for concentrations up to 0.20 g/cm3. This model correctly accounts for the experimental...

The effects of particle size on reversible shear thickening of concentrated colloidal dispersions

The particle size dependence of the reversible shear thickening transition in dense colloidal suspensions is explored. Five suspensions of monodisperse silica are synthesized via the Stöber synthesis. The physicochemical properties of the dispersions are quantified using transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, small angle light scattering, electrophoresis, and viscometry. Rh...
